How to use this calculator

Three inputs. Clean and fast.

Weight is the number you’re starting with. Type it in the field. Decimals work fine: 0.5, 72.3, 1000, 0.025 are all valid.

From unit is the unit your number is in. The dropdown covers every common weight unit: milligram (mg), gram (g), kilogram (kg), metric tonne (t), ounce (oz), pound (lb), stone (st), US short ton, and imperial long ton.

To unit is what you want to convert to. Same list. Pick your target.

Click Calculate and the blue result panel shows the converted value plus four quick-reference figures at the bottom: kg, lbs, stone, and oz. Those four cover most daily needs so you can read all the common formats from one calculation.

Example: 100 kg converted

Weight: 100 / From: Kilogram (kg) / To: Short ton (US)

Result: 0.1102 short ton

Panel also shows:

  • KG: 100
  • LBS: 220.4624
  • STONE: 15.7473
  • OZ: 3,527.4

One input, every useful format.

The balance scale visualization below the result panel shows your entered weight alongside common reference objects. It’s a calibration tool: if you’ve entered 70 kg and the scale shows roughly the weight of a standard adult human, you know the conversion is in the right ballpark. More useful for sanity-checking than for precision.

Why so many weight units exist

Metric is clean: grams, kilograms, tonnes, all powers of 1,000. The imperial system accumulated over centuries without central coordination. Ounces, pounds, stone, hundredweight, and tons emerged from different trades with different practical needs.

Stone is 14 pounds because 14 pounds was a common market weight for wool and agricultural goods in medieval England. It got standardized, stuck, and survives today almost exclusively in the UK and Ireland as the unit for expressing human body weight. The rest of the world finds it baffling.

The short ton (US) and long ton (UK) differ by 160 pounds: 2,000 lbs vs 2,240 lbs. The metric tonne is 1,000 kg = 2,204.6 lbs, which sits between the two. All three are called “ton” in casual speech, which creates genuine confusion in shipping and trade documents.

The US settled on the short ton (2,000 lbs) for domestic commerce. Britain kept the long ton (2,240 lbs) for imperial use. The metric tonne (1,000 kg) is used internationally. When a cargo manifest says "50 tons," knowing which ton matters: the difference between short and long ton on a 50-unit shipment is 8,000 lbs, or about 3.6 metric tonnes.

The conversion formula: everything goes through grams

The calculator converts through grams as the common pivot. Any input unit converts to grams first, then from grams to the target unit.

All weight conversions through grams:

UnitIn grams
1 milligram (mg)0.001 g
1 gram (g)1 g
1 kilogram (kg)1,000 g

1 stone (st)6,350.29 g
1 short ton (US)907,185 g
1 long ton (UK)1,016,047 g

To convert: grams × (1 ÷ target unit in grams)

Example: 100 kg to lbs = 100,000 g ÷ 453.592 = 220.46 lbs

The “stone + lbs” column shows weight in the British format: stone followed by the remaining pounds. 70 kg is “11 stone 0.3 pounds” — which in everyday British speech gets rounded to “11 stone.” UK bathroom scales often have both kg and stone markings. The converter gives you the exact stone breakdown.

Grams and ounces: the cooking and small-weight table

Grams and ounces overlap constantly in food packaging, cooking, and postal weights. Most countries label food in grams; the US uses ounces. Both appear on nutrition labels.

Large weight conversions: tonnes, tons, and tonnes

The three “tons” cause more confusion in shipping, agriculture, and industry than any other weight unit issue.

In the US, “ton” without qualification means short ton (2,000 lbs). In the UK, “ton” historically meant long ton (2,240 lbs), though metric tonne is increasingly standard. International trade documents should always specify: metric tonne, US short ton, or UK long ton. A 100-ton cargo specification has an 18.5-metric-tonne ambiguity depending on which “ton” is meant. That’s the weight of about 3 adult elephants.

Body weight: how different countries express the same number

Someone who weighs 75 kg will describe their weight completely differently depending on where they live.

75 kg in every common format:

  • Metric (global): 75 kg
  • US/Canadian: 165.3 lbs (or “165 pounds”)
  • British/Irish: 11 stone 11 pounds (abbreviated 11 st 11 lb)
  • Clinical/medical: 75 kg (universal medical standard regardless of country)
  • Old-fashioned British: 11¾ stone (rounded to nearest quarter)

The stone format requires converting kg to total pounds first (75 × 2.20462 = 165.35 lbs), then dividing by 14 to get stone (165.35 ÷ 14 = 11 st remainder 11.35 lbs). The converter handles this in one step.

Medical and clinical settings use kilograms worldwide, including in the US and UK. Drug dosages are calculated in mg/kg. Hospital admission paperwork records weight in kg even for patients who only know their weight in stone or pounds. If you’re told your weight for medical purposes, it’s in kg.

Aviation and luggage: where weight conversions cause real problems

Airlines enforce weight limits strictly, and they switch between kg and lbs depending on carrier origin.

Most US airlines use pounds. Most European, Asian, and Australian carriers use kilograms. Codeshare flights — where two airlines share the same physical plane — sometimes publish limits in one unit on one airline’s website and the other unit on the partner’s site.

Common airline limitIn kgIn lbsIn oz

Checked bag heavy32.070.51,128.8
Overweight fee threshold23.050.7811.3
Max checked bag weight32.070.51,128.8

A 50-pound checked bag limit and a 23-kilogram limit are not the same. 50 lbs = 22.68 kg. 23 kg = 50.71 lbs. The difference is 0.32 kg or about 0.7 lbs — small, but enough to matter if your bag sits right at the limit. A bag packed to exactly 23 kg will pass a kg-based scale and a lbs-based scale showing “50.7 lbs.” A bag packed to exactly 50.0 lbs weighs 22.68 kg, safely under the 23 kg limit.

Small weights: milligrams, grams, and the precision end

Milligrams show up in medicine, chemistry, and nutrition labels. Most people never need to convert them, but when they do, the numbers are unintuitive.

Milligrams (mg)Grams (g)Ounces (oz)Context
10.0010.0000353Standard aspirin is 325 mg

100,0001003.5274100 grams
1,000,0001,00035.2741 kilogram

Pharmaceutical doses in mg can look enormous compared to the actual physical size of a pill. 500 mg sounds like a lot. It’s half a gram — small enough to sit comfortably on a fingertip. The confusion between milligrams and grams has caused medication errors; “500 mg” misread as “500 g” (a thousand times more) is a documented clinical incident type. Always verify units when reading medication labels.

Common conversion mistakes

Confusing metric tonnes with short tons. 1 metric tonne = 1,000 kg = 2,204.6 lbs. 1 US short ton = 2,000 lbs = 907.2 kg. A 10-metric-tonne load and a 10-short-ton load differ by 928 kg — nearly a full extra metric tonne of material. In construction, shipping, and agriculture, this is not a rounding issue.

Rounding stone incorrectly. 70 kg is 154.3 lbs, which is 11 stone 0.3 lbs. Saying “11 stone” is correct rounding. Saying “11 stone 3 pounds” is wrong — that would be 71.4 kg. The fractional pounds from a stone conversion are fractions of a pound, not whole pounds.

Using troy ounces for everyday weight. Gold, silver, and precious metals use troy ounces (31.1035 g). Everyday items use avoirdupois ounces (28.3495 g). 1 troy oz is about 10% heavier than 1 regular oz. If you’re converting a gold weight, the result in “ounces” depends entirely on which ounce definition you use. This calculator uses avoirdupois ounces — the standard for everything except precious metals.

Troy vs avoirdupois: why it matters for gold

You have 100 grams of gold. How many ounces?

In avoirdupois oz: 100 ÷ 28.3495 = 3.527 oz (what this calculator shows)

In troy oz: 100 ÷ 31.1035 = 3.215 oz (what a gold dealer quotes)

The market price of gold per troy ounce and the weight in avoirdupois ounces produce different dollar values. Always confirm which ounce system a buyer or seller is using for precious metals.

Treating pound-force (lbf) as the same as pound-mass (lb). In everyday contexts they’re the same number on Earth: a 100-pound object exerts about 100 pounds of force downward. In physics and engineering, they’re different quantities. The converter handles pound-mass (weight), not pound-force (a measure of force, like pressure or thrust ratings).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pounds is 1 kilogram?

1 kilogram equals approximately 2.2046 pounds. A quick mental approximation: multiply kg by 2.2 to get pounds. Example: 70 kg × 2.2 = 154 lb.

How many grams is 1 ounce?

1 ounce equals exactly 28.3495 grams. 16 ounces make 1 pound. 1 pound = 453.59 grams.

How many pounds is 1 stone?

1 stone equals exactly 14 pounds or 6.35 kg. Stone is used primarily in the UK and Ireland for body weight. A person weighing 11 stone = 154 lbs = 70 kg.

What is the difference between a US ton and a UK ton?

A US short ton = 2,000 pounds (907.2 kg). A UK long ton = 2,240 pounds (1,016 kg). A metric tonne = 1,000 kg (2,204.6 lbs). Always clarify which "ton" is meant in international contexts.

How do I convert my weight from kg to stone and pounds?

First divide kg by 6.35029 to get decimal stone. The integer part is the stone value. Multiply the decimal part by 14 to get the remaining pounds. Example: 75 kg ÷ 6.35029 = 11.81 st = 11 st 11.4 lb.

How many mg in a gram?

There are exactly 1,000 milligrams (mg) in 1 gram. Milligrams are commonly used in medicine and nutrition labels. 500 mg = 0.5 g, which is a typical supplement dose.
